Introduction

The Biotechnology Department at P.S.R. Engineering College was established in 2002 and offers a B.Tech program in Biotechnology. With an intake capacity of 30 students, the department received NBA accreditation for the period from 2023 to 2027.Recognized as a Research Center by Anna University, it provides M.S (By Research) and Ph.D programs in Biotechnology. The department boasts specialized faculty in Microbial Technology, Molecular Biology, Genetic Engineering, Bioprocess and Chemical Engineering, Nanobiotechnology, and Computational Biology. Program verticals encompass Bioprocess Technology, Biosciences, Medical Biotechnology, Biochemical Engineering, Computational Biology, Agro Biotechnology, Quality and Regulatory Affairs. The department is equipped with cutting-edge laboratories, valued at over 3 crores, housing advanced equipment like Fermentors, Gel Documentation systems, UV Visible Spectrophotometers, Spectrofluorometers, HPLC, Fluorescence Microscopes, ELISA Readers, Western blotting apparatus, Lyophilizers, CO2 incubators, Gas Chromatographs, and PCR machines. These facilities align with global standards of esteemed institutions.
Focused on academic prowess, the department prioritizes a conducive learning atmosphere and promotes research and extension activities. Research areas include Bioremediation Techniques, Fluid Flow Dynamics in Biological Systems, Biomechanics, Carbon Capture, and Food Processing. Engagement initiatives for students encompass technical associations, guest lectures, workshops, industrial visits, project internships, seminars, conferences, and competitions. Professional associations such as the Society of Biological Chemists (SBI), Microbiological Society of India (MBI), Antiviral Research Society (AVRS), Indian Society of Technical Education (ISTE), and Institute Innovation Council (IIC) offer value-added courses and industrial certification programs, enhancing students’ skills and employability. Students undergo industrial training in modern simulation tools applicable to all bioprocess systems.
Outstanding student performance has led to placements in renowned industries like Zifo R&D Solutions, Reliance Biotech, Biocon, and GE Healthcare. In essence, the Biotechnology Department at PSR Engineering College is dedicated to continuous growth and excellence across academic, placement, co-curricular, extracurricular activities, projects, and consultancy services.

PROGRAMME OUTCOMES (POs)

    The graduate of Biotechnology will be able to

    PO1: Engineering Knowledge: Apply the knowledge of mathematics, science, engineering fundamentals, and an engineering specialization to the solution of complex engineering problems.

    PO2: Problem Analysis: Identify, formulate, review research literature, and analyze complex engineering problems reaching substantiated conclusions using first principles of mathematics, natural sciences, and engineering sciences.

    PO3: Design / Development of Solutions: Design solutions for complex engineering problems and design system components or processes that meet the specified needs with appropriate consideration for the public health and safety, and the cultural, societal, and environmental considerations.

    PO4: Conduct Investigations of Complex Problems: Use research-based knowledge and research methods including design of experiments, analysis and interpretation of data, and synthesis of the information to provide valid conclusions.

    PO5: Modern Tool Usage: Create, select, and apply appropriate techniques, resources, and modern engineering and IT tools including prediction and modeling to complex engineering activities with an understanding of the limitations.

    PO6: The Engineer and Society: Apply reasoning informed by the contextual knowledge to assess societal, health, safety, legal and cultural issues and the consequent responsibilities relevant to the professional engineering practice.

    PO7: Environment and Sustainability: Understand the impact of the professional engineering solutions in societal and environmental contexts, and demonstrate the knowledge of, and need for sustainable development.

The Biotechnology Department Laboratory boasts state-of-the-art equipment, including HPLC, Gas Chromatography, Bioengineering Fermenter, Thermocycler, CO2 Incubator, ELISA Reader, 2D Gel Electrophoresis, Fluorescent Microscope, Laminar Air Flow Chamber, UV-Vis Spectrophotometer, Gel Documentation System, Deep Freezer, Refrigerated Centrifuge, Cryostat, Lyophilizer, Microfiltration, Ultrafiltration, Double Pipe Heat Exchanger, Fluidization and Packed Column, Plate and Frame Filter Press, and a suite of Bioinformatics software tools.

Bioprocess Engineering Laboratory

Bioprocess Engineering Lab equipped with state-of-the-art Bioreactors and a range of supporting Equipment’s including Refrigerated water bath, Air Compressor, Peristaltic pump, CO2 incubator, HPLC, Orbital shaker, etc., are available in the laboratory. serves as a hub for exploring the frontiers of biotechnology. From cultivating microorganisms to optimizing fermentation processes, bioprocessing techniques drive breakthroughs in the bioprocess laboratory

Downstream Processing Laboratory

Downstream Processing involves separation techniques like chromatography, filtration, and centrifugation to extract and refine biomolecules like proteins, enzymes, and pharmaceuticals, etc., DSP lab is equipped with Gas Chromatography, Ultra filtration unit, Lyophilizer, Sonicator Homogenizer, Dyno mill, Centrifuge, Micro filtration module, etc.,

Biochemistry Laboratory

Biochemistry Laboratory is a facility where biochemical techniques are utilized to analyse biological molecules and their functions. It typically houses equipment for protein purification, DNA sequencing, enzyme assays, and spectrophotometric analysis. Biochemistry lab is equipped with Colorimeter, Spectrophotometer, Heating Mantles, Water baths, Analytical Micro centrifuge, etc.,

Chemical Engineering Laboratory

Chemical Engineering Laboratory is a facility where Chemical Engineering principles are applied to conduct experiments, analyse processes, and develop new technologies. Equipped with instruments such as Simple & Steam Distillation, Orifice &Venturi meter, Double pipe Heat exchanger, Liquid Solid Fluidization, Flow through packed column, Flow through Annular & straight pipe, Plate and frame filter press, Leaf Filter, Muffle furnace, Sieve shaker, etc.

PCR in Genetic Engineering Laboratory

Molecular and Genetic Engineering Laboratory is a specialized facility where students to learn genetic material and molecular structures of cells or organisms. Lab is equipped with instruments such as PCR machines, Electrophoresis tank, Gel Documentation System, UV Spectrophotometer, Incubator, Refrigerator, SDS-PAGE electrophoresis, High speed centrifuge, Western blot apparatus, Ice-flake machine, Deep Freezer, UV-trans illuminator, etc.,

Microbiology Laboratory

Microbiology Laboratory is essential tools for magnifying microorganisms and studying their morphology, structure, and behavior. With various types including light and fluorescence microscopes, they enable detailed observation of bacteria, viruses, and fungi. Microbiology Lab is equipped with advanced Microscope, Microbiological Hood for sterilization with UV lighting, Fluorescent Microscope, Orbital Shaker, Autoclave, Refrigerator, ELISA Reader, Incubator, etc.,

Project laboratory

Project laboratory is dedicated solely to the execution of students projects. The other program specific laboratories are also used effectively to run student’s projects. Project Lab is equipped with HPLC, Orbital shaker and Laminar Flow Hood with UV lighting, etc. Other sophisticated instruments such as Biofermenter, GC, PCR, Transilluminator, Gel documentation system, etc are also used by the students for executing the project works.

Research Laboratory

In the Research Laboratory, innovation thrives as students and researcher push the boundaries of knowledge. Researchers explore new frontiers and unravel the mysteries of the universe. Research Laboratory is equipped with Spectroflurometer, UV/Vis Spectrophotometer.etc. Other major equipment in the program specific laboratories are also used by the students for doing the research work.

Department Library

The Department has Library facilities witharound 180 books. Also it has provision for keeping the reports of project work done by our students. The departmental library also has reading hall that can accommodate about 10 people.

Transportation is provided for the students and faculty members. The college is operating around 26 college buses.

An experienced medical practitioner in the cadre of Civil Surgeon visits the Institute periodically and looks after the medical needs of the students.
